About The Charity

The Gacharu Water Development project was inspired and founded by  Reverend Benson Kimaru and his wife Elizabeth Mbure Kimaru to provide safe drinking water for the region. Since then many other people have taken up the cause and now have become a registered charity in Kenya.

On the 27th of February an inauguration service with the blessing and unveiling of a commemorative plaque, conducted by Bishops Daniel Munene Ngoru (Anglican diocese of Kirinvaga), Charles Mwenda ( Meru diocese) and other clergy. This was a poignant day for Rev. Benson, the first anniversary of his father Onesmus Kimaru's death. Over two hundred people attended the service, including children from the primary school. Afterwards everyone attended Onesmus’ remembrance service, and the unveiling of the cross.

This project is an ideal model adding to joint efforts in poverty eradication whilst helping local farmers to raise their standard of living. Fetching water is the women’s work; they travel many miles to a water source. Often through tiredness and the nature of the work they experience illness and  more difficulty in child birth.

Benson Kimaru

Founder

In 2008 I founded a Kenyan water project namely ‘Gacharu.’ This came as a result of an earlier vision that God gave me while attending a one month intensive course for international executive leaders in Mid Pacific centre, Maui- Hawaii in 1996.

In our village in Kenya fetching water is traditionally women’s job. Women fetch water from the river three miles or more from home. As a result many women have developed accumulative fatigue leading to health complications especially during child bearing etc. For this reason my wife and I came up with the idea of founding the clean piped water and sanitation to our village which consists of 24000 people. So far we have supplied it to 6000 people.
